Maria became the wife of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, the second son of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha...She died in exile in Switzerland after World War I when Coburg, the principality her husband and nephew had ruled, ceased to exist. It has been said that she died of shock when the postman delivered a letter addressed to plain 'Frau Coburg.'
