The boundary point on the eastern borders of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality was founded by the Grand Duke Andrei Bogolyubsky in 1168. It is mentioned in the Laurentian Chronicle in 1239 when it was first burned by the Tatars. At the end of the fourteenth and the beginning of the fifteenth century, the town became a part of the Moscow Principality and was the center of Christianization of the surrounding lands. In 1539 the city was destroyed by the Kazan Tatars, a new attack of 1545 was repulsed. According to the legend of this period, when the enemies besieged Gorokhovets, an image of a huge warrior with a sword in his hands appeared over the mountain in the rays of the setting sun. The enemies retreated in panic, and the place from that time is called Puzhalovoy mountain. In the XVII century, with the beginning of the Time of Troubles, Gorokhovets falls under the control of the Poles. From the Gorokhovets district, Prince Pozharsky went from his estate to Nizhny Novgorod to lead the second national militia of 1612. In 1619 a roving detachment of Ukrainian Cossacks ("Circassians") captured Gorokhovets and burned city. This was the last attack the city suffered. С Гороховецкого уезда, из своей вотчины князь Пожарский отправился в Нижний Новгород чтобы возглавить второе народное ополчение 1612 года. В 1619 году кочующий отряд украинских казаков («черкесов») захватил Гороховец и сожег городские укрепления и постройки. Это было последнее нападение которому подвергся город.
